One of the biggest blocks for my clients is thinking up relevant ideas for Instagram content. Coming up with original ideas to help promote our business is usually the last thing we feel like doing at the end of a long day. I’ll be honest I struggle myself. It’s really easy to think of content for my clients, but when it comes to telling my own story on Instagram, sometimes I’ve run out of fresh ideas.

So I was thrilled when a friend of mine mentioned the #marchmeetthemaker daily prompts throughout March. Initially I was just going to have a look at them for a little bit of inspo for my own account. I wasn’t 100% sure how relevant they’d be for me as they’re for makers – illustrators, clothes makers, crafters etc. But as soon as I saw the list of prompts I was captivated. Nearly all of them were universally relevant to small businesses and gave a great opportunity for sharing yourself and the story behind your business in a authentic and fun way. So, I have decided to join in regardless of not being a maker.

Here’s the list of prompts and if you’d like to find out more go to March Meet The Maker. You may be reading this later in the year, or feel like you can’t join in because you’re not a maker, but I’d encourage you to look at the prompts. You could sprinkle them throughout your content in the coming months.

The prompt on 10th March was just ‘You’. It encouraged me to open up and do a quirkly little introduction to myself in an Insta post – from my love of creme eggs to how it’s been a long, windy road to discovering I’m a creative. It was a bit rambling, but it was honest and chatty. And I was delighted that it seemed to resonate with people – it got a lot of comments.

I’m really looking forward to the rest of the challenge and it’s got me scribbling down caption ideas for the remaining prompts. I’m also thinking how to take and find photographs that are relevant. The next caption I’m preparing for is ‘waste reduction’ so I’ve spent about an hour today photographing ‘Who Gives A Crap’ toilet paper. I also got Jamie to help me take a photo for the ‘working with hands’ caption. I put on my most colourful jumper and got Jamie to stand on a chair to take a photo of me writing from above.

So I say, go forth and do some of the prompts for March Meet the Maker, but here are some other prompt ideas of mine that you might like too:

  1. Post up some photos of the area you business is in and talk about how you feel about the area – if you’re in Stockport – there’s some beautiful old buildings crying out to be photographed. If you’re in the countryside, Instagram viewers are hungry for a bit of rural photography.
  2. Where do you get inspiration? If you’re a coach – what books, experts or experiences have influenced you? If you’re a photographer – who do you admire? Or what inspires your photography? Tell us and show us.
  3. Share something about yourself – a hobby or passion – tell us what you love about it. If it’s hiking let’s see you in your hiking boots. If it’s your dog – get a snap up of that doggy. Maybe you’re a keen baker in which case put a photo up of yourself in an apron cooking up a storm.
  4. What do you do if you’re having a bad work day? Read a book, meet with a friend for a coffee, fall back on a trusty Whatsapp group of freelancer friends or perhaps you have a nap?
  5. Favourite independent shop and why.
